Some writers have maintained that the common dog of no particular breeding is more intelligent than his blue-blooded cousin, but I do not think so. The different breeds differ much in intelli- gence, and dogs of the same breed will show a great difference in their ability to learn. First, make up your mind for what purpose you want a dog, and then get a pup of the variety that gen- erations of training and development have fitted for that purpose. Personally, 1 do not like large dogs. For one thing, they eat as much as a calf, and for another, they are apt to get cross and dangerous as they grow old.
