These women, who are also commis-sioners, are proud of the fact that they are the first feminine (44 7 444 womans department. officials ever commissioned by Congress. It Is said that there wasnever before a building set apart at a Worlds Exposition for thedisplay of womans work exclusively. When the time came to prepare for the construction of the. MRS. POTIKK. l^Ai^MliR. Womans Building, a large prize was offered to be awarded for thesuccessful design in competition. Fourteen women architects, notone of them more than twenty-five years of age, submitted designsfor the structure to the scrutiny of the Board of Architects of the womans department. 445 Exposition, and that of Miss Sophia G. Hayden, of Boston, wasaccepted. It Is true that not all of the women interested in theWomans Department concur In the choice of the architects, never-theless the building has been the subject of very general same architect also executed the design.
