The cremation vehicle
This image is one of a series taken of a cremation ceremony at Banjar Wates Tengar. There were some 17 bodies to be cremated of people who had died over a period of time. After death and prior to cremation the bodies would have been buried. The cremation involves releasing the spirit from the body. In order to prevent the spirit leaving the body on the way to the cremation the vehicle on which the bodies are carried is thrown about by shaking tilting and rotating (and the vehicle will be very heavy. Additionally water will be sprayed on the vehicle to confuse the spirits. A separate vehicle is used for the actual cremation (normally the bull) and a third vehicle is used to return the spirits to the village where they will reside in the ancestral home.
