This native insect has a wide distribution in this country. In the East it is generally distributed from Canada to Georgia, it occurs in most of the North Central States, and has been reported from California. It is said to be more abundant in the northern part of the United States than in the southern. The caterpillars prefer the foliage of oak but also attack maple, hickory, hazelnut, and some other trees. Forest trees usually suffer the most damage, sometimes being completely defoliated; but trees in parks and along town and city streets are.
