Wisbech port, Cambridgeshire, England UK

The port of Wisbech is seven miles inland up the River Nene in Cambridgeshire, a county with no coast. Historically, its peak period of activity was in the 18th century when river improvements allowed the number of ship movements to increase dramatically. Agricultural produce made up many outbound cargoes while coal was a major import. These days, the port sees a few ships a month, bringing in timber from the Baltic, as here, and sometimes taking away scrap metal. In recent years, Wisbech has had competition from Port Sutton Bridge five miles downstream which opened in 1987.
