Seal Island Sanctuary, a public sculpture by John McColl, at Apollo Bay, Victoria, Australia

SEAL ISLAND SANCTUARY John McColl’s love of the ocean and seals was the inspiration for his winning design ‘Seal Island Sanctuary’. The sculpture was commissioned by the Colac Otway Shire through the State Government Rural Community Development Scheme funding. Work began on the cypress monolith at the local tip as the log was too massive for Council equipment to budge. John engaged a studio assistant, wood carver, Brad West and after three months of dedicated work in an open air studio, the seals emerged. Installed midst much media attention in August 1999, ‘Seal Island Sanctuary’ has been an interactive delight for visitors to Apollo Bay.
