St Hilda's Church Hartlepool

St Hilda's Church which has Norman origins lies at the centre of the historic Headland area of Hartlepool, an earlier monastic community was founded here by St Aidan 7th Century taking on the name of St Hild who was a nun who arrived in the area in 648 AD. The monastery was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century. The area round the Headland later developed into a fishing village. The 21st century cross in the foreground commemorates the Christian history of the area and marks in the location of a former pilgrims cross that lay on the pilgrim's route to Holy Island.
