Royal Research Ship (RRS) Discovery is a state-of-the-art, multi-role oceanographic research vessel built for the UK's main environmental research organisation, National Environment Research Council (NERC). The ship a merchant navy vessel of the United Kingdom that conducts scientific research for Her Majesty's Government. This vessel is the newest and most advanced scientific research ship in the world.


The RRS Discovery is usually found in remote areas trying to help solve environmental issues. At three years old, the vessel is the newest and most advanced scientific research ship in the world. The ship is owned by the Natural Environment Research Council and operated by the National Oceanography Centre, based in Southampton, and whose sister office is the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, based at Liverpool University. The usual crew complement is 22 people and 30 scientists. At 300ft in length, she is packed with the latest scientific equipment and infrastructure to deploy it in 1,200sq ft of permanent lab space. Specialist container field labs can also be loaded. Discovery has dynamic positioning thrusters to keep her in exactly the same position even in heavy seas.
