Parochial benefices were sometimes appropriatedto the maintenance of chantries; in some caseswhat was done amounted to this: that the parishchurch was converted into a chantry for the lordof the manor and his family. Thus, in 1319, SirJohn de Trejagu, Knt., founded a chantry for fourchaplains in the Church of St. Michael Penkvil forprayers for himself and family. The proposal wasapproved by the bishop, who made the churchcollegiate, and the chief of the four clergymen whowere to serve it an archpriest, with the care of theparishioners.
