Hard white porcelain, glazed withthe intense brilliant blue called mazarine-blue (a phrasesupposed to be derived from Cardinal Mazarin but prob-ably a mere conventional term for a favorite color). Theblue lightens at mouth, which is rimmed with the interiorwhite glaze, and the lighter color shows as a band at glazed base with seal-characters of the reign in blue. Height, 15% inches. Second Afternoon. 420—Large Bottle-shape Vask (Chien Lung} Swelling oval strong-shaped body with easy curve to wideneck and slightly expanding month. Hard porcellanona ware covered witli the t/ao-pien or furnace transmutationglaze accidentally discovered at end of Kang Hsi period,originally intended for xung-dc-buuf and BOW known asflamhc; the copper-oxide glaze was transformed into a riotof streaks of green, gray, brown and crimson, the bluecoloring predominating over the original intent of red, thewhole forming a brilliant effect of color.
