The following is a copy of the orders passed in favor of Mr. Maverick, who acquired all John Per-kin*6 privileges: Noddles Ileland is granted to Mr. Sainl Mavack to enjoy to to him and his hcires for ever. Yieldingand <fc paycing yearly att ye Generall Court, to ye Govnr for the time being, either a fatt weather, a fatt hogg,or Xls in money, & shalle givc leave to Boston and Charles Towne to fetch woode contynually, as theire neederequires, from ye southerne pU, of sd ilsland. It appears that the neede of Boston and Charlestown re-. quired all the wood growing, and these two enterprising towns appear to have used it pretty freely, for by 183*they had removed all the timber on the island except two trees! Noddles Island was layd to Boston, as it was termed, in 1636. It originally contained about 663acres, together with the contiguous flats to low-water mark. Before any alterations in topography had beenmade the island was fancifully stated to resemble a great bear, described as follows: The bears head, anelevated tract of land, was known as the 1 middle farm, with Hog Island marsh at its northeast Hie small,round pond in this part called Eye pond in consequence of the loss there of the eye of a noted gunner helpsout the fancied figure. The bears back, fronting the mouth of Mystic River, was the most elevated part ofthe island, and was known as Eagle Hill, and its abrupt termination at the confluence of Mystic River a
