Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970), US Arctic explorer, in a fur suit used during polar explorations. McMillan made numerous expeditions to the Arctic in a career spanning some 40 years from 1908 to 1957. This photograph dates from around 1910 to 1915. During this period, MacMillan took part in the Crocker Land Expedition in 1913. This was an attempt to find an Arctic island claimed to have been sighted by Robert Peary, but later shown to be a hoax. The expedition members were stranded until 1917. Photograph from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
