A man's hands holding fresh blackberries (Rubus spp.) harvested in Colorado

Blackberries have many uses - from an easy-to-eat snack, to an ingredient in pies, jams, jellies, liqueurs, to dyes for both fabrics and hair, and more. They contain anthocyanins, which produce the rich, dark, nearly black color of the berries. The tough, thorny stems of wild blackberries have been used in barriers around buildings or livestock enclosures. Many modern cultivars no longer have thorns, making the plant easier to harvest.
