Northwood, London, UK, 16 July 2014. Councils across the UK are marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 with commemorative poppy sowing. This local council has sown a total of 21kg of seeds, a mix of Flanders poppies and Golden Coreopsis, covering a total area of 10,000 square metres across 21 separate locations in the borough. Poppies were first associated with war and Remembrance Day because they were the only flowers that would grow on the disturbed earth of battlefields in Western Europe.
