In thefollowing year he wasappointed Assistant Master in Castle School, where he revealed exceptionalability as a teacher of Mathematics. In 1910he was appointed Mathematical Master in. Hermitage School, Helensburgh, a postwhich he held at the date of his interested in his subject he con-tinued his studies and secured in 1914 thedegree of (Lond.) with highest honours. At the outbreak of war Macdonald, beingrefused permission to serve abroad, joined theDumbartonshire Volunteers and rapidly rosefrom Private to When the need formen became acute he joined the Artists Rifles3 May 1917, and after serving for a few monthsat Romford was transferred to the CadetSchool, Uckfield, Sussex, whence in March1918 he proceeded to France with the rank of2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in action 27May 1918. Macdonald was a man of sterling sincerityand uprightness. He gave no half-heartedservice and tolerated none. His loss is onewhich can never be filled.
