Aarschot is a city situated in the province Flemish Brabant (Vlaams-Brabant) on the banks of the river Demer in a region called “Hageland” and little east of Leuven (Louvain). On August 19th 1914, it became the first Flemish martyr city in the first world war when German reprisal hit the city extremely hard after a German commander was killed on the balcony of the town hall. Over 150 people, including the mayor and his son were executed and the city was set on fire.
