Skin epidermis squamous cells, light micrograph

Light micrograph of skin squamous cells. Squamous cells form the epidermis, or the outermost layer of skin. The squamous cells mature towards the surface (top of image), and lose their nuclei (round blue dots) as they ascend. Thus, only keratin substance (darker purple-pink) from the squamous cells remains at the very top of the skin surface. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 400x when printed at 10cm.
