Inaddition, the death of her chil-dren, one by one, had touchedthe hearts of the people, andthey gave her a hearty supportduring her reign. Though Anneherself was without great ability,yet the twelve years of her sove-reignty form one of the mostinteresting periods in literatureand one of the most brilliant inmilitary success that have everoccurred in the whole history of the British empire. 208. Union between England and Scotland, 1707.—One im-portant subject which everybody was discussing at this timewas whether England and Scotland should be united. Since. Anne 206 HISTORY OF ENGLAND [1707 the reign of James I, one hundred years before, the twocountries had had one king, but two Parliaments and differ-ent laws. The Scots and English had been constantly at warwith each other, and a feeling of intense hatred had grownup between them. One cause of this was the religiouspersecutions under Charles II and James II. Scotland at this time was a very poor country. It hadlittle commerce and little agriculture, and the peasantswere for the most part miserably poor. Indeed, one of thegreatest of the Scottish patriots gave it as his opinion thatthe only way to cure the evils of poverty was to make all thepoorer people serfs. During the latter part of Williamsreign, the merchants of Scotland had entered into a gigantictrading scheme, called the Darien Company, which was tobring great wealth to the country by
