The early 1900s caption reads: "GODFREY'S SECOND ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM.—A revulsion of shame came over Godfrey and his followers, in the midst of their murderous work in the streets of captured Jerusalem [they captured it in 1099]. They remembered their religion and realized how they were disgracing it. The slaughter was checked, the chiefs withdrew from the city, and re-entered it as pilgrims, unarmed, barefoot, and singing psalms."
