Atthe age of eighteenhe came to Bostonas book-keeper forthe firm of Kimball & Fisk, retail clothiers. He remained with this firmnine months, and then associated himself with JohnGove & Co., wholesale clothiers. He was with themfor a number of years. In 1858 the firm of Whitten,Hopkins & Co. was established, Mr. Whitten becomingthe senior partner. In 1862 the firm of Whitten, Bur-dett & Young was founded and began business in theold Cathedral building. In 1872 the great fire cleanedout the establishment, and the firm took temporary. The Beebe block onWinthrop Square having been completed, Whitten,Burdett & Young moved in and took possession, thefirm name having since been changed to Burdett, Young& Ingalls, and Mr. \\hitten remaining as special was also special partner in the firm of Simonds,Hatch & ^Vhitten, wholesale dealers in furnishing Whitten has been a director in the Commonwealthand Mechanics National banks and a trustee in the Home Savings Bankever since its incor-poration. In 1880Mr. Whitten, at theearnest solicitation ofhis friends, became acandidate for alder-man, was elected andre-elected the twofol 1 o w i n g he again ranfor office, in 1884,his victory was amost pronouncedone. For two yearshe was chairman ofthe board, and wasregarded as pre-emi-nently the businessman in that election in 1884a
