COMPACT BONE, SEM

The human skeleton is made up of bone, composed of calcium, an important element in organic function. The periosteum (conjunctive membrane) covers the bone surface, followed by a layer of cortical bone (resembling ivory), very dense and resistent. Located under this is the cancellous bone, containing the bone marrow. There are 3 types of bone cells: osteoblasts and osteocytes (which build the bone matrix) and osteoclasts (which destroy it). Here, a fragment of bone tissue (Havers system) viewed under MEB 1,000 x.
