The New England Primer is a very small subject, only aboulthree inches square, yet, small as are its dimensions, it is somethingthat for a century and a half at least exerted no small influence onthe creed, the morals, and the institutions of New England. Forfive or six generations it was an inmate of every household : itwas studied in every school, and its teachings, received in earliestchildhood, remained as familiar truths when the failing memory ofage had let go all else save the Bible.
