. The street railway review . the buildings on the corners and tearing them down tomake room for the tracks. Apr. 15, 1901.] STREET RAILWAY REVIEW. 259 RAILWAY TELEPHONES. NEW TYPE OF VAN DORN COUPLER. The telephone is rapidly coming to be as necessary a part ofthe modern intcrurban electric railway equipment, as the tele-graph is in steam railroad operation. .\ telephone system possessesone great advantage over the telegraph in tliat the chief dispatcher The accompanying illustration shows the Van Dorn coupling onmodified lines from any formerly built. Especially designed to meetany requirements, it is only intended for elevated roads or roadswhere the cars are vestibuled, where it is impossible to uncouplefrom the top. By this method the uncoupling is done from theside of the draw bar heads instead of from the top. There areother advantages to be gained by this method, for this class ofservice. It is far easier to uncouple for elevated roads where youare limited for space. The pin is provided with a large handle. is not only able to deliver his orders along the line, but can alsohold direct communication with the employe for whom the orderis intended, and is therefore able to keep in closer touch with allthe train crews on the road, than he could do in any other way. The Novelty Electric Co., of No. 50, North Fourth St., Phila-delphia, Ilakes a specialty of telephone instruments for electricrailway service. The portable instrument shown in Fig i, is fur- V.\N DOKN IMIKOVEU COIIPLEK. for uncoupling. All the difference there is in the whole construc-tion is that the springs are on the top instead of on the side. The Van Dorn couplings are well known all over the worldand are being adopted by companies in every country, their greatsimplicity and durability having won this place for them. Alltheir motions are positive, and being machine fitted their main-tenance is comparatively nothing. The company has issued a newcatalog which will be sent on application. ELECTRIC S
