Yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) looking at the camera. This mongoose has moved, along with its mate, into a garden in a residential suburb, situated adjacent to a coastal wilderness area and is habituated to humans. The yellow mongoose is a social mammal that normally inhabits savannah and scrub in southern Africa. They usually live in extended family groups in complex burrows, emerging during the day to forage for food. Mongooses feed mainly on insects, but can also take a wide variety of prey, including small mammals, birds and their eggs, reptiles and vegetation. Photographed in Struisbaai, in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa.
