Odeillo solar furnace. Array of flat mirrors that swivel to track the motion of the Sun, reflecting incident radiation onto an array of parabolic reflector mirrors (not seen). These parabolic mirrors focus sunlight to concentrate the energy and achieve high temperatures. The sunlight can be focused onto a very small area, and temperatures of up to 3500 degrees Celsius can be attained. This can be used in the form of thermal power, or directly to heat objects. This solar furnace, at Odeillo, France, is the largest in the world. It opened in 1970.
