The Blackwater Mine chimney and winding engine foundations at Waiuta Ghost Town near Reefton on New Zealands South Island.
The Blackwater Mine chimney and winding engine foundations at Waiuta Ghost Town near Reefton on New Zealands South Island. Waiuta is now in the capable hands of the Department of Conservation (DOC). The site was part of a gold rush that started in 1905. Gold production stopped in 1951 when the Blackwater Shaft collapsed. Repairs were uneconomic and so the mine closed leaving the miners unemployed and forced to abandon the town to seek work elsewhere.
