This work, titled Hastings, is one of the so-called "unfinished" pictures by British artist JMW Turner.

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are A Ship Aground, The Fighting Temeraire, Arth from the Lake of Zug, and Lausanne. This work, titled Hastings, is one of the so-called "unfinished" pictures that, after half a century in the cellars of the National Gallery, were removed to the Tate Galley and put on exhibition in 1906. This great "find," as it was called, of 21 Turners was the sensation of the year in art circles. Hastings was a favorite subject with Turner.
