A steel and wire grill blocks off a mine shaft in the old gold mining area in the Bendigo Historic Reserve, Central Otago, New Zealand.

The blocked off entrance to a mine shaft at Welshtown, part of the old gold mining area around Bendigo in Central Otago, New Zealand. The shafts were dug to access the quartz reef gold in the area. The ore was crushed on site. Alluvial gold was first discovered at Bendigo at the bottom of the hill but later reef gold was found and extracted from the many mines in the area. In its heyday the area was highly successful and many miners flocked to the area.
