Ears Nos. 2 and 3 have a proper taper toA thick tip leads to shorter ears, later maturity and deeper kernels. Fig. 12. Space Between Rows.—Study these ears carefully. EarNo. 3 has about the right amountof space between the rows to insurebest results, while ears Nos. 1 and 4illustrate the extreme. Ear No 1has too much space, showing a de-terioration or run out appear-ance, and it will shell out a low percent, of corn to the cob. On theother hand, where there is too littlespace between the rows, as in thecase of No. 4, the ear generally pre-sents a dull, starchy or immatureappearance. The kernels are toopointed or wedge like, leaving agreat deal of open space next to thecob, and are lacking in No. 2 has a little too muchspace, while there is perhaps notquite enough on ear No. 5.
