Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule, illustration. This coenzyme molecule is key to intracellular metabolic energy transfer, as it is able to store and transport chemical energy within cells. ATP also plays an important role in the synthesis of nucleic acids. The energy transfer occurs through hydrolysis and regeneration of a phosphate group, via the molecule adenosine diphosphate (ADP). ATP has the molecular formula Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (black), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue), oxygen (red) and phosphorus (yellow).
