The wires had three coatsof oil. Supporting nothing, but themselves, each cabletakes the form of a catenary, which has a half-span of1972 feet, and a deflection of 147 feet, measured fromthe main tower,, and a half-span of 2455 feet and adeflection of 227 feet, measured from the south this basis each cable would have a tensile load atthe main tower of 21,840 pounds, and at the southtower of 22,000 pounds. Experiments were made ofthe efifect of the wind pressure, and the conclusion wasreached that it might, in extreme cases, double the cal-culated strains, and the cables were considered amply.
