The basket became disconnected from an Air Force KC-10 during an in-flight refueling operation, shattering the HornetÕs canopy. Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Wright piloted the aircraft safely to a forward operating base, while combating severe windblast, cold temperatures, possible injury and catastrophic damage to the aircraft by the remaining 10-foot section of the refueling hose still attached to the basket. Stennis and her embarked Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW-9) are conducting combat missions over Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
