He was in-terested especially in the welfare and develop-ment of the city of Lowell Avhere he built uphis own fortunes. He helped to improve thecity to the extent of his power. He built hishandsome residence on Central street; re-modeled and enlarged his store building;built in 1871 the Masonic Temple, at thattime the finest building in the business dis-trict. He had a taste for fine architecturaleffects. The iron-front building in which helocated his dry goods business was an admir-able structure also.
