Edmund Ironside meeting Canute (Cnut the Great), Island of Alney (or Olney),1016
Illustration from a special edition history of England published in 1903. On the death of Aethelred a dispute arose as to his succession between Cnut 7 Edmund Ironside. Following Edmund's defeat at the Battle of Assandun the 2 rivals agreed to partition the country. all of England except Wessex to be controlled by Canute and when one of the kings should die the other would take all of England. Edmund died shortly after, some believe on Cnut's orders.
