The Dutch-oven type of boiler setting is in common use at sawmillplants where fine wood fuel is used, because it affords a larger com-bustion chamber than is practicable with the standard setting. Anotheradvantage of this type is that the furnace may be placed far enoughaway from the boiler heating surface so that the heat available for LARGE PLANTS 165 steaming purposes is from completely burned fuel. In a standardsetting, with the fire directly under the boiler shell, gases still in a stateof combustion strike the relatively cold heating surface of the boilerand this retards the combustion process and causes soot deposits.
