A few years ago there was a remarkable INDUSTRIAL ART. 193. revival of the tastefor painted fans—forthese ladies toys aremore subject thanalmost any others tothe chancres of ca-pricious fashion —and there are atpresent in Europemany persons whoseentire time is givento doing decorationof this kind. Thetwo specimens weillustrate on page186 are charmingexamples of this kindof work. On one isa pretty little pas-toral scene a laVVatteau, and on theother is a designsymbolizing the be-trothal of happylovers. Both areexquisitely paintedand mounted in themost delicate anddainty manner pos-sible.
