Microscopic pressure sensor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an ant on a tiny pressure sensor. The circular area at the centre of the sensor rests on a membrane. This process allows the pressure to be measured. The T-shaped indentations are attachment points for a temperature sensor (not seen), which is on the same scale. Miniaturisation of components makes them cheaper, lighter and more efficient. Such sensors could find uses in a wide variety of places, such as automobile engines. This sensor was designed by the German technology company Siemens. Magnification unknown.
