THE OSAGE ORANGE (Toxylon pomiferum) This handsome hedge tree has stout thorns and foliage of unusual lustre. The staminate flowers are borne in loose, head-likeracemes. The pistillate flowers are in globular heads. Theyappear in June,after the leaves,on separate trees. The green,orange-Hke fruit is 4 to 5 inches in diameter, with many seeds and bitter, milky juice. The wood is very durable in contact with the soil.
