Llandinam Wind farm Turbines across hill summit near Llanidloes Powys Mid Wales UK

Wind farms are currently a very contentious issue in Wales. The Welsh Government has set a target to produce 7 terawatt hours of renewable electricity (also including solar and tidal) by 2020. It narrowly failed to meet its target of 4 terawatt hours in 2010. In this document (full name Technical Advice Note 8: Renewable Energy) it identified areas where large scale wind farms are to be encouraged, including the South Wales Valleys and the remote upland areas of the Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales. However there has been widespread opposition, the main argument that the windfarms and the accompanying infrastructure - substations, cabling, pylons linking their output to the National Grid - will blight and despoil the countryside and wilderness habitats will be lost for ever. The windfarm in this image - Llandinam, also known as Penrhyddlan and Llidiartywaun, or P&L - is owned and operated by Scottish Power Renewables, and public consultations have been carried out with a view to extending and repowering the site, increasing the height of the turbines from around 150 feet to 400 feet.
