A C9th Celtic wheel cross, a C9th/10th cross-shaft & a C13th effigy slab in Llantwit Major Parish Church (West Church), Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, UK.

A C9th Celtic wheel cross, a C9th/10th cross-shaft & a C13th effigy slab in Llantwit Major parish church (West Church), Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, UK, before their removal to the refurbished Galilee Chapel in November 2013. Houelt Cross (rear R) is decorated with triangular key-patterns in two paired bands. Erected by Houelt (Hywel) ap Rhys, ruler of Glamorgan (Glywysing) who died in AD886, for the soul of his father Rhys. The style of decoration & the inscription's half-uncial letters suggest the sculptor was Irish or Irish-trained. Samson Cross (rear L), inscribed on W (Samson placed this cross for his Soul) & E (For the Soul of Illtud, Samson the King, Samuel Ebisar), faces, was probably topped by a wheel head. The decorated coped stone is carved with the tonsured head of a Medieval priest.
