Earth's internal structure. Cutaway illustration showing the different layers that make up the structure of the Earth. The crust extends downwards for around 35 kilometres. The mantle (orange) is first solid rock and then semi-molten rock, and is around 2900 kilometres thick. The outer core (yellow) is a liquid layer of iron and nickel, around 2160 kilometres thick. The inner core (centre, bright glow) is a solid sphere of iron-nickel alloy, with a radius of 1320 kilometres.
