Canadian engineer . but as original ideas connected with the en-gineering profession generally. Most of the apparatus aboutto be described is dependent on the electric current foroperating power and as this factor is not always available, the manufacturing these goods (The ChicagoPneumatic Tool Company, Fisher Building, Chicago, 111.)have devised a portable gas-driven generator that willoperate some of the smaller devices and will doubtless beimproved and enlarged so as to operate machines forheavier work. In municipalities and upon the tracks ofelectric lines current is available for the maintenance of thelarger machines and the operation of these, except in isolatedcases, has so far been confined to this class of track. Fig. I will present an accurate idea of the electric spike-driving apparatus that is capable of placing 5,000 screwspikes firmly in the track during one working day. The car is built with a welded steel frame, the wholebeing carried on fiat, elliptic springs. It is equipped with. Fig. 1. a i2-horse power gasoline engine, direct connected througha suitable clutch to a 6-kw. 125-volt; direct current generatoj:,suitable transmission for the car, also being provided,, whichgives a speed of fifteen miles per hour. This -outfit iscapable of operating two electric spike drivers ; four electricwoo<l boring machines, and an electric grinder, which ismounted on the car for the grinding of the tools. , . A reelcontaining five hundred feet of cable is mounted on the carand a light portable switch-board, containing the magnetswitches and plug connectors, is provided, to which to con-nect the spike drivers and wood boring machines. Seventy-five feet of cable is attached to each of the portable tools, thus giving a range of action of five hundred and seventy-five feet on each side of the car, or a total of eleven hundredand fifty feet. The car weighs fourteen hundred pounds, and canbe easily set off of tracks in service out of the way of pass-ing trains
