APDK Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya. Disabled people use tricycles as mobile GSM public telephones.

APDK Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya started in 1985 APDK s biggest challenge in Kenya is cerebral palsy Their workshop produces tricycles which are given to disabled people for free Many of them use the tricycles as mobile GSM public telephones as well as having a useful means of mobility for those unable to use their legs Cerebral palsy is on the increase in Kenya with most sufferers living in slums and unable to get appropriate help It is common for parents to think it is a curse Interview with tricycle user Doris Atieno Nymngor aged 29 Disabled from birth Doris is unable to move her legs She grew up in the Siaya district a 9 hour drive from Nairobi and her parents died from AIDS when she was 15 Leaving school at 16 she was kicked out by her brother with nothing who was unable or unwilling to support her She was offered a free ride in a hearse which was also on official business I went to a train station and slept in a train I found a friend there and she took me to her house She paid for me for two months then she took me to the streets and taught me to sell sweets She found APDK who gave me a tricycle for free and when it went wrong they repaired it I had it for five years Then my friend got me this phone a year ago It is the better than selling sweets when I get 100 credits on the phone I get another 100 profit so it is good In one day I can make 500 shillings profit It is good I work six days and on Sunday I go to Church I share the money with the owner of the phone so I get 250 shillings per day for myself Doris pays 2000 shillings per month for rent and is able to buy clothes but more amazingly she cares for and pays for her brothers children to be educated I am so much grateful for the assistance and would be happy for assistance with my own phone
