Thescraps make excellent fuel, and a whale makes more than enough fortrying him out. When we have done with a whale we save scraps forthe second starting, and therefore we never need use any wood after thefirst capture. We have great pots or kettles set in brickwork on the deck, withlittle furnaces beneath where the fires are built. The blubber is passedup from the blubber-room, and cut into thin slices, so that the oil canreadily free itself. Some of the men watch the fires, while one of theofficers keeps an eye on the oil to see that it is secured when it is of theproper color. The value of the oil depends greatly upon this color, andthe men in charge of the work cannot be too careful. A WHALEMANS WORK. 29. TRYING OUT. 293 THE YOUNG N1MRODS. While they are en^a^ed in trying out, the men have little time for «/ C? O t/ O anything: else. The main-sail is furled and the top-sails reefed, and the • C2 i ship drifts and floats pretty much as she likes. It is hard work, and ev-erybody is glad when it is over. There is not an idle person on board, and one of the busiest of the lot is the cooper. It is his duty to get thecasks ready for the oil, and to head them up when they have been prop-erly filled ; and when his days work is done there isnt a man more readyto go to sleep than the cooper.
