His fatherwas Christian G. Gunther, who was for upwardof fifty years the leading fur merchant of NewYork. He had four sons, of whom the deceased wasthe eldest. Young Charles Gunther received hisearly education at the Moravian institute at Naz-areth, Pa., and on returning to New York enteredColumbia college grammar school, where lie com-pleted his studies.
