Orion, Lepus and Columba Constellations, 1822

Orion is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. It is one of the most conspicuous and most recognizable constellations in the night sky. Orion was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations defined by the International Astronomical Union. The stars of Orion were associated with Osiris, the sun god of rebirth and afterlife, by the ancient Egyptians. Lepus is a constellation lying just south of the celestial equator, immediately south of Orion. Its name is Latin for hare. Although the hare does not represent any particular figure in Greek mythology. Columba is a small, faint constellation created by Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius in 1592 in order to differentiate the unformed stars of the large constellation Canis Major Its name is Latin for dove. It is located just south of Canis Major and Lepus. He originally named the constellation Columba Noachi (Noah's Dove), referring to the dove that gave Noah the information that the Great Flood was receding. Psalterium Georgii was a constellation created by Maximilian Hell in 1789 to honor George III of Great Britain. It was created from northern stars in Eridanus. It is no longer in use. A Celestial Atlas (1822) by Alexander Jamieson, inspired by the star atlas of Johann Elert Bode, but restricted itself to stars that could be seen with the naked eye. Comprising a systematic display of the heavens in a series of thirty maps illustrated by scientific description of their contents and accompanied by catalogues of the stars and astronomical exercises, plate 24, 1822.
