McClure Arctic expedition. 19th-century artwork of a scene from the McClure Arctic expedition sent to the Canadian Arctic's North-West Passage to find the lost Franklin expedition. British Navy ship HMS Investigator (right) was commanded by Robert McClure. Entering the North-West Passage in 1850, they explored the region and spent three winters trapped in the ice. This sledge party, led by Samuel Gurney Cresswell (1827-1867) is departing the ship in Mercy Bay on 15 April 1853 to take invalid men to another ship, HMS Resolute, which would eventually rescue them. Artwork from Cresswell's series of eight sketches of the voyage, published in 1854.
