Excavations at Cueva Mayor site. Researchers excavating in the El Portalon section of the Cueva Mayor cave system in the Sierra de Atapuerca foothills in northern Spain. The artefacts found in this area are mostly from the Bronze Age, with dates from 900 BC to 1690 BC. An upper level also includes remains from the late Roman period (4th century). The extensive discoveries at the Atapuerca sites have led to numerous advancements in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO. Photographed in July 2016.
