A public opposition meeting takes place about drilling for natural gas in the Loyalsock State Forest September 8, 2012 in Ralston, Pennsylvania. Oil and gas companies are set to drill on leased land underneath the 114,500-acre park which lies above the Marcellus Shale formation. Oil and gas companies will use hydrofracking methods to extract the gas. Hydrofracking is a controversial drilling method which pumps millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals into horizontally drilled wells to stimulate the release of the gas.

The Marcellus Shale gas field stretches diagonally across West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York State. Drilling operations have provided Pennsylvania with billions of dollars of income through employment and tax revenue. The environmental impact is a politically sensitive issue in a resource dependent state.
