This bridge is very hand-somely ornamented, and is illuminated at night with gas. A wooden bridge was erected here about 1840. It was badly builtat the beginning ; and falling into decay, its renewal was necessary. Penrose Ferry bridge is situate a short distance above themouth of the Schuylkill. The stone-work on the west side of the Schuylkill carries the structureby five arches over a considerable stretch of land. The workin the centre is supported by cylindrical cast-iron piers, whichwere sunk by the pneumatic process. The central draw workson a pivot, leaving a passage of 77 feet on each side. Thespan of the pivot is 214 feet, and the east and west spans 185feet each. The whole length of the bridge, with its approaches,is 2419 feet.
